News: Can I have milk in glass bottles again please?
Many plastics contain Bisphenol-A (BPA) which mimicks the hormone estrogen. The side affects of which can cause sterility, heart-disease, behavioural changes and possibly worse. Due to widespread plastic use Earth's oceans are now contaminated with BPA - which isn't much fun for marine life either.
Please can I have the glass milk bottles back!

News: No more muffins
I was wondering when the dear old wheat rust would raise it's head. And Uganda seems to have borne the brunt of it. The wheat rust is chewing its way through North Africa and into Asia. It'll be goodbye to super-size-me burgers if this gets into the West.

News: Siberian Methane Leak
New research in the Arctic show that methane locked on the sea floor is now bubbling to the surface at a rapid rate. Although small in comparison to the amount of greenhouse gas being added to the atmosphere by human activity it is significant and points to further methane "leaks" to come. As the temperature rises more frozen methane will be freed, which will heat the atmosphere further. Don't you love feedback loops?

The US is going to design killer organisms for military purposes. What these things will look like or do is the thing I'd like to know. Apparently they will have loyalty programmed in and an emergency off switch. Is it me or has no one seen Jurassic Park?

Ever wondered what it would be like to simulate countries and what they would do under different scenarios? It's being done - the SEAS project by Simulex Inc has the world mapped with individuals programmed to respond as crowds to propoganda, loss of food/water, economic difficulties etc - which could lead to mass migration, civil unrest or war. It all sounds very War Games to me.
