Hole in the head News: Get Creative - it's a dying skill

  New HiTech News: Forest Bathing

Going for a walk in a forest or 'forest bathing', as Japanese call it, improves immune response. Scientists suspect this is due to the benefits of breathing in phytoncides - airbourne chemicals produced by trees to protect themselves from fungi and insects.
I keep telling people "Plant more TREES!' Now I can mention the additional health benefits (along with the extra oxygen, rainfall and place for a tree house). click here to read

Other Topics News: The Kaimanawa Wall

This is fascinating. A seemingly ancient man-made wall in New Zealand. Theories abound about it's origins. It could be a natural occurance - but it sure looks man-made. If so, possibly pre-dating European settlement. Most likely made by the Moriori (or Waitaha) people who settled NZ before the Maori. For some reason it reminds me of the lost temple discovered in Peter Jackson's "Forgotten Silver". click here to see the picture gallery and read about it

New Weaponry News: A light saber that almost works

Apparently the "Spyder III" lightsabre from Wicked Lasers is strong enough to burn flesh and cut through light materials. Looks pretty flash too. Still waiting for a full blown lightsabre (once it can melt metal doors I'll know it's the real thing) - or better yet give me a Vibrosword anyday! click here to read the dailytech article

Other Topics News: Ecology 101: Mining is BAD

The process of mining (especially open cast/pit mining) produces large quantities of toxic waste - containing such yummy substances like arsenic, lead and mercury. Obviously this reduces populations of organisms down-stream from the mine.
Mining companies are pushing hard to extract huge lodes of gold and copper up-stream from Bristol Bay. A bay that already supports many diverse ecosystems. I feel an environmental disaster in the making... click here to read the article

Mass Destruction Anyone? News: Can I have milk in glass bottles again please?

Many plastics contain Bisphenol-A (BPA) which mimicks the hormone estrogen. The side affects of which can cause sterility, heart-disease, behavioural changes and possibly worse. Due to widespread plastic use Earth's oceans are now contaminated with BPA - which isn't much fun for marine life either.
Please can I have the glass milk bottles back! click here to read

Karkehan News: Missing an organ? Print out a new one

One day soon you may be able to whip up an organ replacement using a 3D Printer. Scientists have successfully "printed" a human vein using live cells from the donor. The technology could extend to other organs (or maybe additional ones?). click here to read the article
